Director's Portfolio

Overview

I enjoy telling stories that test my imagination, whether that's with an impossible budget of 6 boxes and a backdrop, or whether it's a complex play requiring innovative tech weaved with multiple theatrical devices to tell fantasy stories or moments. My shows are visually striking - sometimes cheeky - but with sincere emotion, and often using innovative digital technology. There'll always be an 'unexpected' moment. Collaboration is at the heart of my creative process; I value the insights of talented specialists, ensuring that their expertise enhances my strong artistic vision, creating a seamless and impactful theatrical journey.

Artistic Vision
Background

After graduating from Warwick University with a degree in Theatre & Performance, I initially moved in to acting before pursuing a career in directing. Initially, I directed, co-wrote and co-produced with Kat Glenn for our own company, Distraction Theatre Company. After a couple of years here, this led on to more commercial work with open air shows and mid-scale theatre with a variety of companies (Chapterhouse, Heartbreak, Leatherhead Theatre, Blue Orange Theatre, Quill & Inkling amongst others). For 9 years I also worked with Europe's biggest T.I.E company, White Horse Theatre, creating shows that tour to schools and theatres around Europe and S.E Asia.

Beck Gadsby is a highly skilled director with a wealth of experience spanning 25 years in the theatre industry. She is passionate about bringing compelling stories and innovative productions to life on stage, captivating diverse audiences with her work. Specialising in period dramas, classics, and comedy, Beck has cultivated a reputation for her imaginative approach to storytelling. Her productions often feature a unique blend of traditonal storytelling devices and innovative ideas, making them memorable experiences for the viewers. Throughout her career, she has worked in mid-scale theatres, as well as on international tours and in studio theatres, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the art of theatre.

More recently, I have been exploring the use of digital technology and how it can be used for storytelling. In 2024 I was awarded a DYCP grant to explore this further and in 2025 I will be taking a trip to Japan to see the work of innovative immersive company, Team Lab.
